Tobacco smoking and the risk of long COVID: a forward-looking study examining possible pathways

Updated

Abstract

Among 11,944 participants, 9.2% reported symptoms of Long COVID after initial infection.

  • Smoking was linked to a slight increase in the odds of developing Long COVID, but this finding was only borderline significant.
  • After adjusting for factors like age and income, the link between smoking and Long COVID was not statistically significant.
  • Smokers were more likely to have long-standing illnesses or disabilities, which may contribute to the risk of Long COVID.
  • A small indirect effect of smoking on Long COVID was found through its association with long-standing illness or disability.
  • No significant direct effect of smoking on Long COVID was observed.
