Effects of Three Days of Sodium Bicarbonate on Performance and Body Responses in Female University Basketball Players

Updated

Abstract

Sodium bicarbonate ingestion led to a significant decrease in mean sprint times from 1.70 to 1.34 seconds.

  • Sodium bicarbonate supplementation resulted in reduced mean circuit times from 31.3 to 30.6 seconds.
  • Mean jump height increased from 26.0 cm to 26.8 cm with sodium bicarbonate compared to placebo.
  • Performance decrements for sprints were significantly lower with sodium bicarbonate (9.9%) compared to placebo (24.7%).
  • Postexercise blood lactate concentrations were higher with sodium bicarbonate (8.2 mmol/L) than with placebo (6.6 mmol/L).
  • No gastrointestinal side effects were observed between the sodium bicarbonate and placebo conditions.
