Sodium Bicarbonate Slows Muscle Fatigue but Does Not Improve Performance in a Simulated Basketball Game

Abstract

Sodium bicarbonate supplementation may delay neuromuscular fatigue during a basketball match simulation.

  • Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) decreased over the game simulation, indicating neuromuscular fatigue.
  • Sodium bicarbonate supplementation resulted in a less pronounced decrease in MVIC compared to the placebo.
  • Both high-frequency and low-frequency muscle twitch forces were significantly greater with sodium bicarbonate supplementation.
  • Fifteen-meter sprint times increased by approximately 2% during both trials, suggesting fatigue development.
  • No significant differences were observed in layup completion percentages between the two conditions.
