Swietenine may slow diabetic kidney damage by blocking cell death through activating protective cell signals

Abstract

Administration of Swietenine (Swi) significantly enhanced renal function in diabetic nephropathy (DN) rats.

  • Swi improved oxidative stress levels in DN rat models.
  • The compound inhibited ferroptosis, a form of cell death associated with oxidative damage.
  • In vitro, Swi increased cell viability and reduced oxidative stress in high glucose-induced podocyte cells.
  • Activation of the Akt/GSK-3β/Nrf2 signaling pathway was identified as a mechanism through which Swi exerts its protective effects against ferroptosis.
  • Network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses predicted potential targets of Swi related to DN.
