Treatments that may reverse cell aging: Review of drugs and therapies tested in people

Updated

Abstract

Six completed clinical studies evaluating pharmacological interventions targeting cellular senescence were identified.

  • Senolytic treatments, especially dasatinib plus quercetin, may lead to preliminary improvements in certain functional outcomes.
  • Reductions in senescence-associated biomarkers were observed with senolytic interventions.
  • Senomorphic and mTOR-targeting therapies demonstrated effects on selected tissue and immune-related outcomes.
  • Adverse events reported were generally mild or manageable.
  • Small sample sizes and short follow-up periods limit the assessment of uncommon and long-term safety risks.
  • Current evidence indicates that targeting cellular senescence is feasible but does not yet establish clinical efficacy or long-term safety.
