How prostate cancer treatments cause cell aging: causes, treatment options, and patient impacts

Abstract

Therapy-induced senescence (TIS) may influence treatment response in prostate cancer (PCa).

  • TIS is a stable form of cell cycle arrest triggered by anticancer treatments.
  • In PCa, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapies, and targeted agents can induce TIS.
  • TIS is associated with both tumor-suppressive and tumor-promoting effects through a mechanism called the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).
  • Combining therapies that induce senescence with strategies that target senescent cells may help address treatment resistance.
  • Ongoing clinical trials are exploring ways to integrate senotherapy into PCa management.
