Death rates and causes among U.S. nurses working rotating night shifts

Abstract

Women with ≥5 years of rotating night shift work experience increased mortality rates.

  • All-cause mortality risk is elevated in women with 6-14 years (HR 1.11) and ≥15 years (HR 1.11) of rotating night shift work compared to those who never worked night shifts.
  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality risk is also higher for women with 6-14 years (HR 1.19) and ≥15 years (HR 1.23) of rotating night shift work.
  • No significant association was found between rotating night shift work and overall cancer mortality, except for lung cancer.
  • Women with ≥15 years of rotating night shift work have a higher risk of lung cancer mortality (HR 1.25).
