Sleep

Stable differences in thinking skills and staying awake during sleep loss and body clock disruption

Updated

Abstract

Performance consistency on cognitive tasks during sleep restriction and circadian misalignment was indicated by intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranging from 0.54 to 0.96.

  • Individual differences in performance during sleep restriction and circadian misalignment were stable and trait-like.
  • Higher-order cognitive tasks, such as the Stroop and Visual Search tests, showed high consistency in individual performance.
  • Other tasks commonly used in sleep studies exhibited varying levels of performance consistency, with ICCs from 0.22 to 0.94.
  • Vulnerability to sleep restriction and circadian misalignment differed based on the specific task and the metric used within tasks.
