How Easy and Helpful Mobile Health Apps Are for Supporting Lifestyle and Medical Care During Pregnancy

Abstract

29 studies were included in the evaluation of mHealth apps for pregnancy-related health care.

  • 19 studies focused on lifestyle mHealth apps, while 10 studies addressed medical health care apps.
  • 10 out of 19 lifestyle studies reported positive acceptability, and 14 reported favorable feasibility results.
  • 4 lifestyle studies showed significant outcomes related to weight gain restriction, vegetable and fruit intake, and smoking cessation.
  • Only one study on medical apps indicated positive user satisfaction.
  • 9 out of 10 medical studies reported effectiveness, but most had insufficient power to confirm significant effects.
  • Overall, evidence on the effectiveness of these mHealth apps is limited and requires further investigation.
