Curcuma aeruginosa root extracts may relax the uterus

Updated

Abstract

The chloroform extract of Curcuma aeruginosa exhibited an IC50 of 31.4 microg/ml against oxytocin-induced uterine contractions.

  • In nonstimulated uteri, neither extract showed significant effects on contraction.
  • In stimulated uteri, both extracts inhibited contractions in a concentration-dependent manner.
  • The chloroform and methanol extracts had varying IC50 values against different stimulants, indicating differing potency.
  • The inhibition of contractions may be linked to interference with calcium influx through voltage-gated L-type calcium channels.
  • The methanol extract also reduced contractions in calcium-free conditions, suggesting possible intracellular mechanisms.
  • The extracts do not activate beta2-adrenoceptors, as their effects were unchanged by propranolol.
