Changing Morning Melatonin Patterns Make It Hard to Measure Melatonin End Time in Preschool Children

Updated

Abstract

Dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) ranged from 17:22 to 20:40, with a mean of 18:55 ± 0:54.

  • DLMO was positively associated with bedtime, sleep onset, and midsleep in preschoolers.
  • Morning melatonin levels varied significantly, allowing the calculation of DLMOff in only 8 out of 20 participants.
  • In the small subsample, later DLMOff correlated with later chronotype, sleep offset, and midsleep.
  • For 45% of children, melatonin levels remained at or above 4 pg/ml at habitual wake time.
  • Evening melatonin patterns were consistent, making DLMO calculations reliable, whereas morning patterns were often irregular.
