Amount of Belly Fat Linked to Treatment Success and Surgery Risk in IBD Patients Starting Anti-TNF Therapy
Updated
Abstract
The final cohort included 176 patients undergoing anti-TNF treatment for inflammatory bowel disease.
- At 12 months, patients with visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume between 1500-2999 cm3 had 3.52 times higher odds of treatment response compared to those with volume less than 1500 cm3.
- No significant differences in treatment response were observed at 6 months.
- VAT volume ≥3000 cm3 did not show improved treatment response compared to volume <1500 cm3.
- A visceral fat index (VFI) of ≥0.67 was associated with a 48.22 times higher odds of surgery at 6 months compared to VFI <0.33.
- At 12 months, VFI ≥0.67 remained associated with a 20.94 times higher odds of surgery compared to VFI <0.33.
- Post hoc analysis suggests that VAT may influence how the drug is processed in the body.
