Age (Dordrecht, Netherlands)

Voluntary exercise may improve the body clock in older mice

Updated

Abstract

Age was associated with reduced running wheel use and slower resetting of circadian rhythms.

  • Older mice exhibited fragmented activity patterns compared to younger mice.
  • Running wheels altered the spontaneous firing rate rhythm in the brain region that regulates circadian rhythms.
  • Both young and aged mice showed changes in their circadian rhythms after a shift in the light:dark cycle.
  • Aged mice experienced longer lasting internal desynchrony following the light:dark cycle shift.
  • Access to a running wheel mitigated some age-related changes in the circadian system.
