Waist size is linked to heart and metabolic risk in women screened on National Woman's Heart Day

Abstract

90% of women without a history of cardiovascular disease or diabetes were found to have at least one major modifiable cardiovascular disease risk factor.

  • One-third of women screened had three or more major cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Nearly half of women with elevated total cholesterol or low HDL-cholesterol were unaware of their abnormal cholesterol levels.
  • 16% of women with no history of hypertension had high blood pressure.
  • Among fasting women, 9% had high blood glucose levels indicating unrecognized diabetes.
  • Women with a waist circumference of 35 inches or more showed higher likelihoods of elevated blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and impaired glucose levels.
  • 62% of women screened for stress had levels associated with increased cardiac risk, and 27% met criteria for clinical depression.
