Mediterranean diet and lifestyle for weight loss and managing obstructive sleep apnea: Results from the MIMOSA clinical trial

Updated

Abstract

Mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) change was -24.7 for the Mediterranean diet group and -27.3 for the Mediterranean lifestyle group, compared to -4.2 for standard care.

  • Participants with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) showed significant reductions in AHI following dietary and lifestyle interventions alongside standard care.
  • The Mediterranean diet and lifestyle interventions resulted in AHI improvements that were significantly greater than those achieved with standard care alone.
  • Post-intervention, both intervention groups experienced lower daytime sleepiness and insomnia compared to the standard care group.
  • No adverse effects from the interventions were reported during the study.
  • The benefits of the dietary and lifestyle interventions were observed regardless of participants' CPAP usage and weight loss.
