Whey or Casein Protein with Carbohydrates and Their Effects on Metabolism and Cycling Performance

Updated

Abstract

Co-ingestion of carbohydrate-casein hydrolysate during exercise resulted in a significant decrease in total carbohydrate oxidation.

  • Total carbohydrate oxidation was substantially lower with carbohydrate-casein hydrolysate compared to carbohydrate-only.
  • Fat oxidation was significantly higher with carbohydrate-casein hydrolysate than with carbohydrate-only.
  • Carbohydrate-casein hydrolysate ingestion led to a faster time trial compared to placebo-water.
  • Neither protein hydrolysate improved time trial performance when compared to carbohydrate-only.
  • Exogenous carbohydrate oxidation was not notably influenced by either protein hydrolysate.
