Work schedules linked to motivation for healthy lifestyle changes in overweight workers in Japan

Abstract

Among 9,243 participants, 15.0% were night/shift workers, who showed lower motivation for lifestyle change compared to daytime workers.

  • Night/shift workers were younger and had a lower proportion of men compared to daytime workers.
  • 26.9% of daytime workers were in the for lifestyle, compared to 22.2% of night/shift workers.
  • Night/shift workers were less likely to demonstrate action and maintenance stages of change, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.85.
  • In participants working long hours (≥10 hours/day), the association between night/shift work and lower motivation for change was stronger, with an adjusted odds ratio of 0.65.
  • A significant interaction was found between long working hours and night/shift work regarding motivation for lifestyle change.
