5-MeO-DMT as a potential treatment for alcohol use disorder: early clinical trial results

Essence

In people with alcohol use disorder receiving CBT, single-dose intranasal 5-MeO-DMT showed acceptable short-term safety and was linked to less drinking and craving over 12 weeks.

Evidence

This was an open-label phase 2a single-dose clinical trial at two English clinics with 12 efficacy participants followed to Day 84, with all 41 adverse events mild or moderate.

Caveat

The signal is preliminary because the study was small, open-label, uncontrolled, and combined the drug with preparation, integration, and a 10-week CBT program.
