Short-term effects of blocking GIP and GLP-1 hormone receptors in people without a pancreas

Abstract

Infusions of GIP receptor antagonists reduced meal-induced inhibition of bone resorption to 84 ± 9% and 85 ± 8% of baseline compared to 64 ± 15% with placebo.

  • Endogenous GIP is associated with the regulation of bone resorption after meals, independently of pancreatic function.
  • Infusions of GIP receptor antagonists led to a significant increase in bone resorption compared to the placebo.
  • GLP-1 plasma responses increased during the administration of GLP-1 receptor antagonists, suggesting interaction between these hormones.
  • No significant effects on glucose metabolism, gastric emptying, appetite, food intake, triglycerides, or blood pressure were observed with GIP or GLP-1 receptor antagonism.
