Adults with ADHD but no insomnia history have mild sleep problems without delayed body clock timing: a possible ADHD subtype?

Updated

Abstract

Among 105 participants, ADHD participants scored in the mild insomnia range and showed reduced sleep quality compared with controls.

  • ADHD participants exhibited lower sleep quality than matched controls.
  • No significant differences in bedtime or mid-sleep time were found between ADHD and control groups.
  • Sleep quality was consistent across stimulant, nonstimulant, and unmedicated groups.
  • A correlation was observed between later timing of stimulant dosing and later sleep times among ADHD participants.
  • A potential phenotype of ADHD without circadian delay was identified, characterized by insomnia and sleep quality disturbances.
