Drugs that activate alpha-2 receptors to prevent shivering after general anesthesia

Updated

Abstract

In a review of 20 studies involving 1401 surgical participants, α-2 agonists significantly reduced the risk of postoperative shivering.

  • Meta-analysis showed a risk ratio of 0.28 for shivering among patients receiving α-2 agonists compared to controls.
  • Significant heterogeneity was observed in the studies, with an inconsistency rating downgraded due to unexplained variations.
  • Only one study reported on the incidence of core hypothermia, while 12 studies measured core temperature without suitable pooling of results.
  • Limited data indicated that sedation and bradycardia were more common with dexmedetomidine compared to placebo.
  • The overall quality of evidence regarding shivering prevention was rated very low.
