AI simplified

Abstract

A total of 53 studies on AI-based skin cancer detection were included in the review.

  • Shallow AI techniques were used in 14 studies, while deep AI techniques appeared in 39 studies.
  • Up to 11 evaluation metrics were employed to assess the models, with accuracy being the primary metric in 39 studies.
  • Studies with smaller data sets tended to report higher accuracy scores.
  • The reliability of models with high accuracy is questionable due to their training on limited data sets and fewer diagnostic classes.
  • A direct comparison between different methods was complicated by the variability in evaluation metrics and image types used.
