Artificial Light at Night Changes Nighttime Behavior in Coastal Amphipods at Realistic Light Levels

Abstract

At 2.0 mW m<sup>-2</sup>-2** of nighttime light, the activity of the intertidal amphipod Marinogammarus obtusatus extended across the entire 24-hour cycle.

  • Increasing levels of artificial light at night reduced the number of swimmers and maximum swimming height in amphipods.
  • Nocturnal swimming activity peaked shortly after nightfall under control conditions but was diminished at 0.1 mW m-2 and further suppressed with higher irradiance.
  • The number of active individuals did not change significantly with increasing light levels.
  • Nocturnal swimming is linked to mating and foraging behaviors, which may increase vulnerability to predation.
  • Even low levels of nighttime light exposure could disrupt population dynamics and trophic interactions in coastal ecosystems.
