Ayahuasca increases communication in visual processing and imitation brain networks

Updated

Abstract

The highest dose of DMT significantly increased right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) connectivity.

  • Enhanced connectivity in the pSTS is associated with improved subjective social cognitive states.
  • There was a strong positive correlation between pSTS and supplementary motor cortex connectivity and perspective-taking experiences.
  • Ayahuasca produced positive psychological effects, including better perceived social relationships at one-week follow-up.
  • Findings suggest a novel mechanism of action for psychedelics during early stages of social information processing.
