How Growing Conditions and Gypsum Affect the Amount and Psychoactive Compound Levels in Psilocybe cubensis Mushrooms

Abstract

Using a casing layer and gypsum may increase yields of Psilocybe cubensis by 896.6 g/kg of dried substrate.

  • Casing significantly improves biological efficiency to 161.5%, compared to 40.5% for the control group.
  • There is a delay of approximately 2 days in fruiting body formation with the use of casing.
  • Total tryptamine content is slightly reduced to 0.85% when using a casing layer.
  • Supplementation with both casing and gypsum maintains high total tryptamine levels at 0.95%.
