Abstract

Exposure to 0.4 mg/L or higher of p-Chloro-m-xylenol (PCMX) caused ocular malformations in zebrafish larvae.

  • PCMX interferes with the development of photoreceptors, resulting in retinal pathology.
  • Concentrations of 2 and 2.8 mg/L further impair image-forming vision and visuomotor responses.
  • PCMX disrupts the expression of genes related to both the non-image-forming visual system and circadian rhythms.
  • Higher concentrations (≥1.2 mg/L) lead to abnormal sleep/wake behaviors, such as daytime hyperactivity and insomnia-like symptoms.
  • Melatonin intervention may help mitigate the behavioral deficits caused by PCMX exposure.
