How natural sleep patterns relate to stimulant use

Updated

Abstract

Consumption of energy drinks, alcohol, and cigarettes is higher among individuals with an evening chronotype.

  • Evening chronotypes reported more frequent use of energy drinks, alcohol, and cigarettes compared to morning chronotypes.
  • The preferred timing of stimulant consumption varied between morning and evening types on both working and nonworking days.
  • Statistical analysis indicated that stimulant use was associated with chronotype and age rather than social jet lag.
  • Individuals aged 30 and older with an evening chronotype demonstrated the highest levels of stimulant consumption.
  • Morning chronotypes were less likely to use stimulants than their evening counterparts.
