How rotating work shifts in different directions affect alertness and job performance

Participants (n = 28) showed varying performance based on rotation direction in rapidly rotating shiftwork schedules.

  • Complex task performance was influenced by the interaction between shift type and rotation direction.
  • In some instances, participants performed better on tasks during counterclockwise (CCW) shifts compared to clockwise (CW) shifts.
  • Vigilance task performance also varied with shift type and rotation direction.
  • Early morning and midnight shifts presented challenges for both CW and CCW rotation schedules.
