Cocaine use for 10 minutes collapsed all three measures of cue-potentiated synaptic changes back to baseline.

  • Cues associated with drug seeking can enhance synaptic connections in the brain.
  • Cocaine use interrupts the synaptic changes that support motivation for drug seeking.
  • After cocaine use is stopped, brain changes related to motivation can be restored.
  • Changes in dendritic spine structure are linked to the motivation for nonreinforced drug seeking.
  • The relationship between spine morphology and drug seeking is altered by cocaine access.
