Eating live microbes linked to bowel health and depression in US adults

Updated

Abstract

A median intake of 66.1 g/day of live microbes is associated with lower risks of depression and bowel issues.

  • Participants with moderate to high intake of live microbes had a significantly lower risk of depression compared to those with no intake.
  • A lower risk of hard stools and loose stools was observed in participants with higher live microbe intake.
  • The relationship between live microbe intake and depression is mediated by the types of stool consistency.
  • Bowel health and depression may influence each other in their association with dietary live microbe intake.
