Alcohol experience enhanced glutamatergic activity at ventral hippocampus to nucleus accumbens synapses.

  • Glutamatergic signaling within the reward circuit of the brain is altered during alcohol abuse.
  • Dopamine D1 receptor-expressing medium spiny neurons in the nucleus accumbens play a key role in alcohol dependence.
  • Chronic alcohol exposure abolished long-term depression at synapses from the ventral hippocampus to D1-MSNs.
  • Calcium-permeable AMPARs were inserted into the synapses following chronic alcohol experience.
  • The enhancement of glutamatergic input to the nucleus accumbens may contribute to increased reward-related behaviors associated with alcohol.
