Hippocampus-Triggered Inhibitory Signals in the Brain’s Reward Center

Abstract

Ventral hippocampal input produces stronger excitation in D1+ neurons compared to D1- neurons in the nucleus accumbens.

  • Medium spiny neurons in the nucleus accumbens express either D1 or D2 receptors and project to different targets.
  • Ventral hippocampal inputs activate parvalbumin-positive interneurons more preferentially than somatostatin-positive interneurons.
  • Suppressing parvalbumin-positive interneurons primarily decreases feedforward inhibition evoked by ventral hippocampal inputs.
  • Repeated cocaine exposure alters the excitation of D1+ and D1- neurons without changing the level of inhibition.
  • These findings indicate that the balance of excitation and inhibition in the nucleus accumbens is affected by drug exposure.
