Evening sleep patterns are linked to sleep problems and daytime tiredness in teens with ADHD

Updated

Abstract

In a sample of 80 adolescents with ADHD, greater evening preference is associated with more sleep problems and daytime sleepiness.

  • Adolescents with ADHD reported higher sleep problems and daytime sleepiness linked to a preference for evening activities.
  • Both adolescent and parent reports indicated that evening preference correlates with increased sleep disturbances.
  • The association between evening preference and sleep issues persisted even when accounting for weeknight sleep duration.
  • Results highlight the relevance of circadian function in understanding sleep challenges faced by adolescents with ADHD.
