Nighttime screen use in teens with ADHD linked to sleep troubles and emotional problems

Updated

Abstract

The average nighttime media use among adolescents with ADHD was 5.31 hours after 9:00 PM.

  • 63% of adolescents reported getting less than 8 hours of sleep on school nights, increasing to 77% for parent-reported sleep duration.
  • Adolescents with less sleep than recommended had higher nighttime media use compared to those obtaining 8 or more hours of sleep.
  • Controlling for various factors, higher nighttime media use was associated with shorter sleep duration and more sleep problems.
  • Increased media use was linked to greater anxiety and depression in adolescents, especially panic symptoms and generalized anxiety disorder.
  • Nighttime media use may be related to eveningness circadian preference and increased daytime sleepiness.
