Sluggish thinking in teenagers linked to sleep patterns, daytime tiredness, and natural sleep timing

Updated

Abstract

Adolescents with sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) reported shorter sleep duration and later sleep onset.

  • Self-reported SCT symptoms were associated with longer sleep onset latency and poorer overall sleep quality.
  • SCT symptoms correlated with increased sleep/wake problems and greater daytime sleepiness.
  • Parent ratings indicated more difficulties in adolescents with SCT regarding initiating and maintaining sleep.
  • A later evening preference was observed in adolescents with SCT.
  • Results remained significant even when controlling for ADHD symptoms and other demographic factors.
