GLP-1 drugs and changes in weight and body fat in overweight or obese adults with and without type 2 diabetes

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment resulted in an approximate 9% reduction in body weight at 3 months.

  • Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference also decreased consistently with GLP-1 RA treatment across all time points.
  • At 6 months, the average weight reduction was around 5%, with notable effects from semaglutide, liraglutide, and exenatide, while lean mass was largely preserved.
  • Weight loss persisted at about 4% by 12 months, with variability seen among different GLP-1 receptor agonists, particularly liraglutide.
  • Fat mass reduction was significant, while decreases in lean body mass were minimal.
  • Individual differences between agents suggest the need for personalized treatment approaches alongside diet and exercise for optimal results.
