GLP-1 receptor agonists may help restore normal blood sugar in people with prediabetes

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists may restore normoglycemia in individuals with prediabetes and obesity, with an odds ratio of 4.62 compared to placebo.

  • Semaglutide and liraglutide were effective in reversing prediabetes, while exenatide showed no significant effect.
  • Both semaglutide (2.4 mg weekly) and liraglutide (1.8 mg or 3.0 mg daily) demonstrated effectiveness regardless of patients' mean age and intervention duration.
  • Semaglutide was more effective in men, whereas liraglutide showed better results in women.
  • High heterogeneity was observed among the studies, attributed to variations in country performance and follow-up duration.
  • The overall quality of evidence from the systematic review was low, indicating a need for further research in various demographics.
