Safety and body shaping strategies with GLP-1 receptor drugs in cosmetic surgery, including effects on muscle loss

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonist users may experience a higher wound complication rate, with 5.19% in semaglutide users compared to 2.78% in matched controls.

  • Increased wound dehiscence is observed in users of semaglutide compared to those not using GLP-1 receptor agonists.
  • Some users may retain gastric contents during surgery despite standard fasting protocols.
  • GLP-1-associated weight loss may lead to clinically relevant reductions in lean mass.
  • The implications of these changes could affect tissue quality and surgical contouring strategies.
  • A multidisciplinary approach is suggested for individualized perioperative planning in aesthetic surgery.
