GLP-1 receptor agonists as treatments for blood sugar, heart and kidney health, brain immune function, and metabolism

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) consistently induce clinically meaningful weight loss and reduce major adverse cardiovascular events.

  • GLP-1RAs slow the progression of chronic kidney disease in both diabetic and non-diabetic populations.
  • The therapeutic effects of GLP-1RAs extend beyond glycemic control and weight loss.
  • Evidence supporting benefits in metabolic liver disease and obstructive sleep apnea is moderate and evolving.
  • Data on immune modulation, skeletal health, neuroprotection, and neuropsychiatric outcomes are largely based on preliminary studies and remain heterogeneous.
  • Future research should focus on long-term safety and the potential for disease modification beyond established cardiometabolic indications.
