GLP-1 receptor agonists and their impact on inflammation and metabolism in type 2 diabetes

Abstract

A total of 1,878 participants were included in the analysis of GLP-1 receptor agonists' effects on inflammatory markers in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with a significant reduction in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels among treated patients.
  • Eighteen studies reported a standardized mean difference (SMD) of -0.39 for CRP reduction with a 95% confidence interval of [-0.72 to -0.06].
  • Fourteen studies indicated a significant decrease in tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels, with an SMD of -0.51 and a 95% confidence interval of [-0.81 to -0.20].
  • Thirteen studies showed a decreasing trend in interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, although this was not statistically significant.
  • Longer treatment durations (≥36 weeks) and specific types of GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with more pronounced improvements in inflammatory markers.
