Abstract
Seven studies indicate that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) may reduce pro-inflammatory signaling in periodontal tissues.
- GLP-1RAs are associated with reduced alveolar bone resorption in preclinical models.
- Liraglutide was the most frequently studied GLP-1RA, appearing in four of the seven studies.
- The effects of GLP-1RAs on periodontal tissues may involve the NF-κB/MAPK and Wnt/β-catenin pathways.
- One study reported reduced inflammatory markers, but did not show a corresponding decrease in bone loss.
- Current evidence is limited to preclinical studies and does not support therapeutic use in clinical settings.
