GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and Preventing Heart Problems Caused by Cancer Treatment

Updated

Abstract

Among 711,271 eligible patients, 21,465 (3.0%) received GLP-1 receptor agonists.

  • GLP-1 receptor agonist exposure was associated with a significantly reduced risk of cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) at 1 year (HR: 0.49) and 3 years (HR: 0.56).
  • The association between GLP-1 receptor agonists and reduced risk of CTRCD was consistent across various cardiotoxic therapies.
  • Use of GLP-1 receptor agonists was linked to lower rates of heart failure, all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, and atrial fibrillation.
  • In patients with metastatic cancer, GLP-1 receptor agonists were associated with reduced risks of CTRCD, all-cause mortality, and hospitalizations or emergency room visits.
