GLP-1 receptor agonists and their impact on mental health and medication-related metabolic problems

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) lead to significant weight loss and improved glycemic control in patients with mental illness on psychotropic medications.

  • Weight loss and enhanced glycemic control were observed in patients with mental illness treated with GLP-1RAs.
  • The treatment was associated with positive effects on mental health for both patients with and without mental disorders.
  • No worsening of mental state, suicidality, new-onset mental illness, or increased psychiatric admissions was reported with GLP-1RA use.
  • Current evidence highlights a need for randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up to assess long-term effects.
