Semaglutide, a diabetes drug, is linked to lower risk of irregular heartbeat: A review and combined analysis

Updated

Abstract

Semaglutide reduces the risk of atrial fibrillation by 42% compared to placebo in high cardiovascular risk patients.

  • The analysis included 10 randomized clinical trials with a total of 12,651 patients.
  • Patients received either semaglutide or a placebo, with a median follow-up of 68 months.
  • Semaglutide's effect on reducing atrial fibrillation risk was consistent regardless of whether it was administered orally or subcutaneously.
  • No significant differences were observed based on the proportion of diabetic patients or body mass index in the meta-regression analyses.
