Risk of obesity-related cancer with weight-loss drugs versus weight-loss surgery

Updated

Abstract

The incidence of obesity-related cancer (ORC) was 5.62 cases per 1000 person-years in patients treated with bariatric metabolic surgery (BMS) and 5.89 cases per 1000 person-years in those treated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs).

  • A total of 6356 adults with obesity and diabetes were analyzed over a median follow-up of 7.5 years.
  • The adjusted hazard ratio for ORC in patients treated with GLP-1 RAs compared to BMS was 1.11, indicating no significant difference in risk.
  • Weight loss was estimated to account for a 41% reduction in relative risk of ORC associated with pharmacotherapy.
  • The study included participants who had no prior history of ORC and were matched based on sex, age, BMI, treatment initiation time, and smoking status.
