How Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists Affect Taste and Eating Behavior

Abstract

Sweet taste detection thresholds significantly differed among 79 adults with obesity, with higher thresholds observed in both 1-month and 6-month GLP-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) users compared to pre-use controls.

  • 1-month and 6-month GLP-1RA users had higher sweet taste detection thresholds compared to pre-use individuals.
  • Food Noise Questionnaire scores were lower in 6-month GLP-1RA users compared to pre-use controls.
  • 6-month GLP-1RA users exhibited lower cue responsivity, cravings, food reward, and energy intake.
  • Other taste and olfactory functions showed mostly unchanged results, with a minor difference in fat intensity perception.
  • Overall, GLP-1RA use may be linked to reduced food salience and cravings.
