  • Gut microbiota influences host metabolism and the integrity of the intestinal barrier.
  • Obesity is linked to decreased levels of beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Akkermansia muciniphila.
  • The presence of type 2 diabetes is associated with a greater loss of butyrate-producing bacteria and altered bile acid metabolism.
  • Hypertensive obesity shows gut dysbiosis with reduced SCFA-producing bacteria and increased production of trimethylamine N-oxide.
  • Functional changes in microbial metabolites and host-microbiota interactions may explain the diversity of metabolic syndrome rather than just taxonomic differences.
