Changing the Gut to Influence Parkinson's Disease: From How It Works to Possible Treatments

Updated

Abstract

Distinct alterations in gut microbial composition and metabolites are observed in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) compared to healthy individuals.

  • Loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra is a hallmark of PD.
  • In some patients, α-synuclein pathology may first develop in the enteric nervous system before affecting the brain.
  • Changes in gut microbiota may be detectable even in the early stages of PD.
  • Current PD treatments alleviate motor symptoms but do not prevent neurodegeneration.
  • Restoring gut health could be a potential strategy for modifying the disease process in PD.
