Of the 2059 records identified, 54 studies met the eligibility criteria for exploring gut microbiome alterations related to sleep.

  • Most studies focused on insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disruptions, and sleep duration or loss.
  • Alterations were reported in microbial diversity and composition, as well as in pathways related to short-chain fatty acids and bile acids.
  • Findings suggested a link between sleep-wake disturbances and changes in the gut microbiome.
  • Limitations included small sample sizes, cross-sectional designs, and inconsistent methodologies across studies.
  • Causality and specific microbial patterns related to different sleep disorders remain unclear.
