Using a Handheld Vagal Nerve Stimulation Device to Treat Long COVID: A Pilot Clinical Trial

Abstract

10% of patients with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection may experience long-term symptoms known as Long COVID.

  • Long COVID symptoms can persist beyond 90 days after initial infection.
  • The exact causes of Long COVID remain unknown, with theories including immune dysfunction and vagus nerve involvement.
  • Handheld external vagal nerve stimulation (tcVNS) was explored as a potential treatment option.
  • Participants receiving tcVNS showed improvements in measures of depression and fatigue compared to controls, but these differences were not statistically significant.
  • The tcVNS treatment was well tolerated among participants.
